A duplex in Fort Myers has become the first site to test a potential remedy for problems being caused by defective Chinese drywall in homes throughout the U.S. The test home is fitted with Chinese-made drywall that emits a noxious sulfur gases that can damage internal wiring and appliances within the home. In an experimental attempt to remedy the situation the home was covered with a tent and pumped full of chlorine dioxide in hopes to stop the gases from being emitted and in turn eliminating the problem.

Scientists, builders, lawyers and residents have been skeptical of the process and are concerned that if the method does help, it may not solve the problem permanently.

If the process works it could be a monumental breakthrough in combating the growing number of homes that are being found to contain the defective and potentially dangerous product.

The EPA and a third party consultant will monitor the testing and if it is not seen to be a complete and permanent remedy more drastic measures will have to be taken solve the problem.

Preliminary test results are expected to ready in about a month; however, it may be a much longer before it can be determined whether the process will be suitable for a permanent solution.
